In a first for 6 News, debates will be streamed featuring key minor party candidates.

6 News can today announce that live debates featuring key Senate candidates will be broadcast in the lead-up to the federal election.

With six spots up for grabs in each state, the final seat will likely be a contest involving a number of minor parties that will make up the Senate crossbench and impact legislation in the next parliament.

These debates will be a chance for each lead candidate to deliver their own message and go head-to-head, discussing the key issues affecting Australians. 6 News Patreon supporters (sign up here for just $4 month) will be given the opportunity to submit questions in advance, while a live chat will also be open on YouTube during the debate so that all viewers can have their say.

6 News chief anchor Leo Puglisi will be moderating the debates.

"This is a first in our six years of operations," Puglisi said. "Never before have we organised such a debate on this scale, and we're really excited to see how it will go. These candidates could all be crucial in determining how smoothly the next government's term is, and it's important that voters get a chance to see them on a national scale".

Each candidate has been chosen by 6 News off a range of factors, including incumbency, likelihood of winning, personal profile and past election results.

While there will be many candidates not able to participate in live debates, 6 News plans to interview and cover on the campaigns of all parties running in the federal election.

All debates will be streamed live on the 6 News YouTube channel and be available to watch on-demand immediately after they conclude.
